WRITTEN BY  Charlamagne Tha God recently released his book “Black Privilege”. The book is very informative and takes you deeper into the life and mind of the infamous Charlamagne. If you've watched him conduct interviews, listened to him on The Breakfast Club, or watch him on MTV you already know he does not have a filter. He says whatever he feels and doesn't sugar coat any of his questions or comments. After discovering “Black Privilege” would be released soon, I already decided I was ordering the book via audio. I figured listening to Charlamange Tha God with his animated personality read his own book would not only be lively and animated but fascinating as well. So over the course of a week I let the chapters play laughing at some parts, taking notes, and relating to different situations that he discussed. Throughout “Black Privilege” Charlamagne shares his love for hip hop by quoting lyric of artist that have meant a lot to him, multiple principals, and raw honesty. He refers to honesty as being his best friend and secret weapon. Throughout his life he's realized that living his truth was more of an advantage than a disadvantage. He also embraced that speaking with no filter made him who he was. I've always loved radio, interviewing and writing. I remember calling Power 99 as a teen and speaking to Charlamagne , welcoming him to Philly and wishing him good luck on his show. As I listened to the book I learned all about his ups and downs, interning, non-stop grinding despite being fired from radio four times and his will to stay motivated and not give up. I'm in my 20s and a lot of time I worry about not having it all together sometimes but as C Tha God said "You have to bust your a** in your 20s and 30's." His three P's (Passion, Poison, and Procrastination) stood out to me. Those are key points to realize at any age. The more we focus on our passion, the more we realize what our poisons are and stay away from them, and the less we procrastinate the better off we'll be. It's not about the pond, it's the hustle in the fish right? Charlemagne gave really good pointers throughout "Black Privilege" for example saying “F*ck you dreams”. In other words just because somebody else is doing it doesn't mean you have to. Find your own lane. Live your own truth! He states “Paths are different. Truth is more than enough to take you where you want to go”. He encourages reading books that are different from your life and situation. He reflects on the “Book It” club. His mother was an “English Teacher” For those of you that don't know “Book It” is a program that's sponsored by Pizza Hut to motivate students to read. When a certain amount of books are read, the student receives a free pan pizza. I had so many Book It awards, pizzas, and an official pin on my shirt in elementary school. I was a whole nerd. I read a lot, wrote a lot and my mother was a teacher as well. Over the course of “Black Privilege” Charlamagne discusses that his belief in God is essential. He believes that faith and determination can change any situation. That you have to pray and then go and put in the work. I'm a Christian and I agree faith and prayer can take you anywhere. Multiple things happened in his child hood and teen years but he didn't let it break him. He rose above it all and revealed his flaws and embraced them. Sometimes we have to reconnect with our child hood in order to move on, to live and succeed. Reconnect with old dreams and remember where we came from. He even reflects that his dad was hard on him because he didn't want him to make the same mistakes him or cousins made. Charlamagne high lights that “Hustle and determination would make him a fish that could swim to whiter waters”. There's so many things you can take away from this book. Charlamagne also takes the time to talk about marriage and being a father, his heritage, slavery, including Denmark Vesey a carpenter that played the lottery and brought his freedom (you all actually want to read more about Denmark it's interesting). That was the first time, I ever heard about Denmark Vesey so that was definitely new knowledge to me. I promise I'm not spoiling the book for you book lovers. Charlamagne wants you to know that privilege is something everyone can access. It's so important to embrace your privilege . It's triple important to live your truth. So take some time and read or listen to “Black Privilege”. Congrats Charlamagne Tha God!
